Abstract:
The reaction of CH3OH with H2S in the presence of zeolites of different composition was investigated. Based on the overall activity, HZSM > HNaY > NaX > NaY. Methylmercaptan and dimethyl sulfide are obtained on all zeolites basically by independent pathways. The reaction takes place between the surface methoxyl groups and H2S with formation of dimethyl sulfide on decationized zeolites primarily containing proton sites; methylmercaptan is obtained through the stage of reaction of CH3O groups with the SH fragments arising in chemisorption of hydrogen sulfide on zeolites with a pair of "Lewis acid-base sites."
