Abstract:
Disproportionation of methanethiol, 2CH3SH reversible (CH3) 2S + H2S, takes place in the presence of catalysts of different composition at 200-500°C. Catalysts with a predominant concentration of Bronsted acid sites on the surface are significantly less active than those having a conjugated acid-base pair of sites, and catalysts with basic and Lewis acid sites are the most efficient. In the presence of these catalysts, disproportionation takes place with a high rate and 100% selectivity with respect to the formation of dimethyl sulfide.
