Abstract:
Product formation and kinetics of the interaction between tetra-(p-anisyl)ethylene (TAE) and Pd(CH3CN)4(BF4)2 (A) and Pd(OAc)2/CF3COOH (B) in acetonitrile/dichloromethane at 20-40°C were studied. The reaction between A and TAE proceeded in seconds, reaching an equilibrium with the free radical cation (TAE+.) and presumably a diamagnetic Pd(2)2+ complex. The formation of TAE+. was demonstrated by ESR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The equilibrium constant was found to be (3 +/- 1)10(-2) and (6 +/- 1)10(-2) M-1/2 at 20.0 and 40.0°C, respectively. Neither Pd metal nor any products of TAE oxidation were detected.
The reaction of TAE with B proceeded in dichloromethane at moderate rate, TAE+. being formed as an intermediate. The final products were Pd metal and 3,6-dimethoxy-9,10-di-(p-anisyl)phenanthrene (70-96% yield). This reaction had an induction period, presumably due to slow initial depolymerization of the Pd(II) acetate trimer to give a more reactive Pd(II) species. The feasibility of a one-electron transfer mechanism in Pd(II) oxidation is discussed.
