Abstract:
The title interaction was studied by IR spectroscopy. The character of the surface compounds depends considerably on the pretreatment of the catalyst surface. The selective oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid (I) necessitates the catalyst working in its partially reduced form. This reaction proceeds through the surface complex of I anion, which is strongly bound to the catalyst surface even at 340°, the temperature of catalysis. The complex can be liberated from the catalyst surface by O and H2O vapors. In the former case a partial destruction of the complex occurs. The presence of H2O vapors is decisive for selective transformation of the surface complex into I and desorption of I at the temperature of catalysis.
