Abstract:
The coprecipitated magnesium-copper oxide system was tested for use in the oxidation of hydrogen. Results show that the results differ appreciably from those obtained previously for the oxidation of hydrogen over solid NiO-MgO solutions, for which the Atomic Catalytic Activity (ACA) remains constant over the range of nickel concentrations from 5 at. % to 100%. The reduction in the ACA of copper found in this investigation with a decrease in its concentration in solid solutions may be due to two factors. The rate of the catalytic stage of the reaction, that is, the capture of oxygen and its reaction with the reactant, may include the transfer of several electrons and therefore depends essentially on the electronic interaction between the copper ions. The second reason for the decrease in ACA may be an increase in the bond energy of oxygen by the action of adjacent magnesium cations, which increases with dilution.
