Abstract:
The catalytic activity of Cu, Mn, and Co complexes with the ligands EDTA, o-phenathroline, NH3, bipyridine, alanine, dimethylglyoxime, quinolinol, cysteine, thiosalicylic acid, mercaptoethanol, histidine, pyridine, p-phenylenediamine, ethylenediamine, salicylic acid, tetrachlorotetrasulphophthalocyanine, and tetrasulphophthalocyanine is studied. In most cases complexing increases the catalytic activity of Cu ions in oxidn. of K3AsO3 to arsenate, the most active Cu complexes being those with 2,2'-biphyridine and o-phenanthroline. The complexes of Cu with EDTA and p-phenylenediamine are almost inactive. Deactivation of Cu ions with EDTA and phenylenediamine is evidently the result of the formation of strong complexes for which the oxidn.-redn. potential is considerably decreased, which prevents redn. of Cu in complexes by arsenite and catalysis of the oxidn. process. Investigation of the catalytic activity of complex compds. involving VO2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ with o-phenanthroline, salicylic acid, histidine, cysteine, EDTA, bipyridine, and ethylenediamine-bis-salicylic aldehyde shows that only the bipyridine complex of Mn(II) is active catalytically. The high activity of the phthalocyanine complexes if Co is discussed briefly.
