Abstract:
Three TiO2 specimens were investigated. Specimens I and II were obtained by pptn. from Ti nitrate and TiCl4 and subsequent heating at 650° for 2 hr. Sample III was a reactive preparation of TiO2 with an anatase structure. With all 3 samples the same type of change in degree of dispersion and phase compn. was obsd.: 1) formation of rutile precedes any increase in dimensions of the primary particles of anatase; 2) the dimensions of the primary particles of anatase never exceed 500 Å; 3) the dimensions of the primary particles of rutile (even at the point of appearance of this phase) are >500 Å. Samples I-III differ somewhat in the temp. at which the anatase-rutile transformation occurs and the degree of dispersion of the anatase particles at this temp., but these differences are within the limits of the above general law. In a second series of tests specimens II and III were heat-treated at 650-1200° and held at this temp. for 2 hr. After cooling diffraction diagrams were obtained at room temp. The results indicate that in the anatase-rutile system, polymorphous change is assocd. with a change in dimensions of the primary particles. Primary particles of max. size 500 Å are typical of the anatase form of TiO2, and particles >500 Å of the rutile form. Composition, and conditions of production and treatment of TiO2, have a marked effect on the rate of growth of the particles and the temp. of the anatase-rutile transition, but all these changes are within the limits of the above law.
