Abstract:
LEED and Auger electron spectroscopy studies showed that the initial rapid O2 chemisorption (to surface coverage ∼0.5 on all crystal faces) is followed by an induction period and then by an accelerated adsorption rate (forming NiO 2-3 at. layers thick). Adsorption is dissociative (without surface reconstruction) and O atoms can diffuse into bulk Ni at higher temps. Catalytic activity is detected by chemical nature of catalyst and structural changes play a secondary role.
