Abstract:
At 200° the oxidation of alkenes and alkynes on Cu2O proceeds via an associative mechanism; the rate-determining step is the decomposition of surface carboxylate species by O2. Increasing the temperature changes the mechanism to one in which the rate-determining step is the 1st interaction between hydrocarbon and catalyst with cleavage of a C-H bond. The 2 mechanisms can be distinguished by the effect of hydrocarbon chain length on the oxidation rate.
