Abstract:
Adsorbed H2O on TiO2 dissociation in the presence of a transverse electric field (which increases the concentration of conduction electrons in semiconductors) and H is desorbed to the gas phase. Dissociation involves participation of electrons of the solid and of surface OH groups, and possibly H2O molecules coordinated to the surface. The O remains on the surface in a stable form. The electric field apparently switches the semiconductor to a low ohmic state.
