Abstract:
For a large excess of oxygen in the system, the reaction for the formation of dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylsulfone from dimethyl sulfide on a vanadium catalyst at 175 C is characterized by a kinetic order of one with respect to the dimethyl sulfide and by zero with respect to oxygen; the reaction products do not inhibit the process for the oxidation of the dimethyl sulfide. In the oxygen concentration range less than 10% by volume, a zero order is found with respect to dimethyl sulfide and a first order with respect to oxygen. The activation energies for the formation of dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone are 4.7 and 8.1 kcal/mole respectively.
