Abstract:
Authors have investigated the reactivity of sulfides of various structure in bringing about gas-phase oxidation by means of oxygen in the presence of vanadium pentoxide at temperatures below 200 C. A correlation is found between the rate constants and the Taft inductive constants, the ionization potentials, dipole moments, heats of formation of the donor-acceptor bond in the sulfide complexes, and also with the reactivity indices calculated by the molecular orbital method. the existence of this correlation indicates that on partial oxidation of dimethyl sulfide in the presence of vanadium pentoxide the sulfur atom plays the part of reactive center.
