Abstract:
Synthetic zeolites, which have higher catalytic activity than amorphous aluminosilicates, have come into increasing use as industrial catalysts. The present study is concerned with comparison of the catalytic properties of amorphous aluminosilica gels and crystalline zeolites of identical chemical composition in the dehydration of propanol-2. In a flow- circulation setup at 310 and 350o C, total catalytic activity of both amorphous and crystalline samples depends very closely on sodium content, the maximum activity being about 10,000 times the imnimum. The total catalytic activity of crystalline aluminosilica gels (zeolites)xceeds that of amorphous aluminosilica gels by a factor of 5 to 6. However, the increased activity of zeilites is due to their more developed surface. The specific catalytic activity of both amorphous and crystalline aluminosilica gels depends not on the crystallinity of the sample but on its chemical composition, i. e. , mainly, its sodium content.
