Abstract:
Vanadium pentoxide containing potassium sulfate is a catalyst for many oxidative reactions, e. g. , the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, the oxidation of naphthalene to phthalic anhydride, etc. The K2SO4-V2O5 system was investigated by thermo-optical, derivatographic, and x-ray phase analyses and by IR spectroscopy. It was shown that K2SO4 and V2O5 react during heating to form the polyvanadate K2O.4V2O5 and an x-ray-amorphous compound (B1). A mechanism for the formation of compound B1 in the K2SO4-V2O5 system is proposed.
