Abstract:
The active component of vanadium catalysts includes V2O5. nK2O. mSO3. In industrial catalysts n is in the 2 to 4 range and m is varied, depending on reaction conditions, from n to 2n. The remaining components form the carrier, the surface and structure of which determine the spatial distribution of the active component in the catalyst volume and its availability to the reacting gases. Silica gel or more complex compositions rich in silica are usually the carriers. The reaction for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in vanadium catalysts takes place within the volume of a film of the liquid active component. The oxidation rate depends on the thickness of the active component layer, which can be varied by changing the carrier surface and the concentration of the active component. For 485 and 420 C the maximum thickness of the active component layer was determined for which the film's volume is completely used.
