Abstract:
The av. size of Co particles on hydrogenation catalysts obtained by thermal decompn. of Co2(CO)8 on Ti-hydride-treated SiO2 is 1-1.5 nm. Such finely dispersed Co has low affinity for adsorption of CO, thus having a low activity but a high selectivity for CO conversion to low-mol.-wt. alcs., mainly EtOH. Spectroscopic evidence (IR, NMR) suggests that the dissocn. of CO on catalysts with high Co dispersivity is slow; in contrast to the the catalyst on the Ti-hydride-SiO2 , the Co/unmodified SiO2 catalyst has relatively large (10-12 nm) Co particles. Even at ambient temp., CO dissocs. on its surface gives C deposits.
