Abstract:
The basic laws of the catalytic oxidation of carbon materials of various origin by nitrogen oxide NO were studied. Compounds of the alkali, a number of alkaline-earth and transition metals are efficient catalysts of carbon oxidation in NO and lower the temperature of the beginning of noticeable oxidation of carbon by about 200-250 K. The addition to NO of small (up to about 2-3 vol. %) amounts of oxygen leads to the nonadditive growth in the rate of carbon oxidation. The addition of steam to nitrogen(II) oxide does not affect noticeably the rate of its reaction with carbon. Mechanochemical activation of the carbon materials substantially boosts the rates of their oxidation by NO and lowers the temperature of the beginning of carbon oxidation.
