Abstract:
Catalysts using Pt/ZrO2-CeO with O storage capacity and complex fluorite structure allow direct formation of synthesis gas; the mechanism of the catalyst system was studied by means of the TAP (temporal anal. of products) method. Full oxidn. of the catalyst and removal of hydrocarbon residues was achieved by heating at 800° for 30 min under O2/Ne flow and cooling to 250°. The oxidized catalyst favors the direct oxidn. of methane to synthesis gas once the O surface coverage becomes slightly lower than the level attained during oxidative pretreatment. The declining methane conversion with lower O coverage suggests that methane activation proceeds via O assisted step. Besides CO as primary product, larger CO2 fractions are rapidly formed as secondary product, and hence it is important to stress the need for parallel reforming activity of the catalyst mediated by the Pt content.
