Abstract:
The vitrification and crystallization of fused glasses from amorphous cordierite charges were studied. The glasses were synthesized by the combined sol-gel method from (EtO)4Si, Mg(NO3)2, and Al(NO3)3. The presence of SiC decreased the phase-separation temperature and increased the crystallization tendency of the melt. Hence, SiC can not be used as a catalyst in the manufacture of cordierite glass-ceramics.
