Abstract:
The energy of the bonding of oxygen in the surface layer of an oxide is important in determining the catalytic activity of oxide catalysts in oxidation. The influence of the conditions of preliminary treatment on the rate of homomolecular isotopic exchange of oxygen on lanthanum oxide has been studied. If contaminating vapors of lubricants and oils from the vacuum system reach the catalyst during the preliminary treatment of the specimens, the rate of exchange is decreased by a factor of several hundreds, and the activation energy increases by
10 kcal/mole.
