Abstract:
By means of full-profile analysis, the cation distribution in the structure of an aluminum-magnesium spinel with a nonstoichiometric composition has been defined more precisely. Point defects have been found in positions that are
not characteristic for spinel. By harmonic analysis of the shape of the diffraction peaks, it has been established that the defects in the specimen of the material are predominantly of the plane stacking defect type, which are due to half-dislocations at a concentration that practically coincides with that of the observed point defects. On the basis of crystal-chemical analysis and the results of the refinement, a model of the structure of plane defects is proposed, apparently related to the concentration of the existing vacancies in the zone of passage of the half-dislocations 1/4 [011]. High-resolution electron microscopy has confirmed the presence of specific extended defects in the specimen, the orientation of which coincides with the direction of the vector of the half-dislocation.
