Abstract:
The Front Cover shows that the SMSI (strong metal–support interaction) observed for palladium supported on titania catalysts, along with the formation of a Pdδ+ state during high-temperature (500 °C) hydrogen treatment, dramatically reduces the pairwise hydrogen addition activity of the Pd/TiO2 catalyst. In their Communication, Kovtunov et al. demonstrate that formation of the Pdδ+ state by encapsulation of Pd metal nanoparticles, confirmed by XPS and TEM techniques, correlates with the decrease in the number of active sites responsible for pairwise hydrogen addition. Utilization of the PHIP (parahydrogen–induced polarization) technique to investigate the SMSI effects, along with TEM and XPS analysis, demonstrated that PHIP effects are more sensitive to the onset of SMSI effects compared with catalytic activity or chemisorption measurements.
