MeOH was oxidized to HCHO using an oxide catalyst, e.g. ferromolybdic oxide. The initial mixt. of MeOH and air was passed through successive adiabatic layers of the oxide catalyst. The temp. at the entrance of each layer was maintained at 200-80°, and at the exit, at 300-400°.
