Sulpholane prodn. by catalytic hydrogenation of sulpholene at 10-40 degrees using as catalyst supported palladium oxide (supported e.g. by alumina, activated charcoal, an aluminosilicate, or silica-gel), followed by regeneration of the catalyst at up to 300 degrees C (pref. 150-250 degrees C) by oxidation with an oxygen-contg. gas (pref. air). Regeneration is pref. preceded by washing with an organic solvent (acetone or isopropanol) followed by nitrogen blowing at 20-100 degrees C.
