A catalyst for the polymn. of ethylene (I), forming polyethylene (II) having increased melt index and narrow mol. wt. distribution, comprises TiCl4 4.4-10.0, THF 0.7-5.7 wt.%, and MgmClnCpHq support (m = 0.8-0.95, n 1.60-1.90, p = 0.60-1.60, and q 1.4-3.4) making up the balance to 100 wt.%. The catalyst is used for the low-pressure suspension polymn. of I in the presence of a trialkylaluminum cocatalyst in a hydrocarbon diluent at 50-100° and 1-40 atm pressure. Thus, the catalyst support having the compn. Mg0.8Cl1.6C0.6H1.4 (III) was prepd. by reacting Mg in C6H14 with BuCl in the presence of I at 65-68° for 2 h. Then, 7.5 g suspension in 100 mL C6H14 was mixed with 0.30 mL THF and 0.41 mL TiCl4 in 10 mL C6H14 at 30-35° to give, after decantation and drying, 8.2 g solid catalyst contg. 2.0 wt.% Ti and 3.3 wt.% THF. The polymn. of I in C6H14 in the presence of 0.25 g/L AlEt3 cocatalyst at 80° for 1 h gave II having melt index (at 190°) 6.7 g/10 min, compared with 1.6 g/10 min for II prepd. without THF.
