The catalyst is produced by coprecipitating aqueous solutions of (NH4)6Mo7O24, Cr nitrate, and Fe nitrate, followed by drying and heating the precipitate at 400-450°. A catalyst with increased stability, activity, and selectivity is produced by adding aqueous NH3 to (NH4)6Mo7O24 and then a mixture of aqueous Cr nitrate and Fe nitrate with Cr/(Cr + Fe) at. ratio (0.5-0.9):1 is added to the resulting solution while maintaining pH 3.6-4.4 until completion of coprecipitation The mixture is coprecipitated with aqueous NH3.
