Abstract: Primary objective of chip presteaming is removal of entrained air prior to impregnation with cooking liquor. In spite of the fact that heating of wood chips with steam is a relatively fast process, the process of air escape does not proceed as efficiently. Complete removal of air from wood chips may be difficult to achieve, even by applying optimal steaming conditions.
