Abstract: Carbon material manufactured in electrical are discharge is oxidized by BrF3 vapor at ambient temperature. Particle morphology in the intact and fluorinated samples is examined by high-resolution electron microscopy. It is shown that fluorination significantly reduces the amount of tubular structures whose percentage in the carbon material was about 80%. A comparative study of graphite fluoride C2F and fluorinated carbon material made by X-ray diffraction, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that fluorine is attached covalently to the nanosized carbon. However, sp(2)-hybrid carbon atoms are conserved in the sample constituting closed cylindrical or quasi-spherical layers. The C 1s spectra show that these layers are surrounded by fluorinated carbon layers of composition C2F The measured electrical conductivities of the intact and fluorinated carbon materials have similar temperature trends, implying that contacts between carbon nanotubes are conserved in the bulk of the fluorinated sample. The experimental data set is analyzed to afford a scenario of the fluorination of multilayer carbon nanotubes.
