Abstract: Reactions of 1,5-, 1,6-, 1,7-, 2,6-, and 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalenes with cyclohexane in the presence of excess aluminum bromide in methylene bromide quantitatively yield 5-, 6-, and 7-hydroxynaphthalen-1-ones and 6- and 7-hydroxynaphthalen-2-ones, respectively. Tricationic C-protonated complexes are presumed to be reactive intermediates in these processes.
