Abstract: A series of Mo/SiO2 and CoMo/SiO2 catalysts containing 0.7–13.3 wt.% molybdenum and 0.7-1 wt.% cobalt were synthesized and studied using IR spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and thiophene hydrodesulphurization. It is shown that the state of the components in the samples depends on their method of preparation: the molybdenum occurs on silica as MoO3 or interacts with the support forming an SiMo heteropoly compound (SiMo HPC). In the presence of cobalt a CoMoSi HPC or CoMoO4 is formed. All these molybdenum compounds may be precursors of catalytic sites for thiophene hydrodesulphurization.
