Abstract: Direct methods were used for the investigation to trace the relationship among the 'packing method,' the 'structure of the bed,' and the 'degree of nonuniformity of the filtered flow. ' The internal structures of the beds formed under different packing methods were investigated by x-ray tomography. The nonuniformity of the filtered flow was determined in the same bed from the distribution of the temperature field under the conditions of the occurrence of an exothermic catalytic process. Results showed that the reason for the formation of local irregularities in flow is the presence of irregularities in the structure of the bed which are formed during its packing.
