Abstract: Thermodesorption, work function, and mass spectral studies of H, N, and NH3 adsorption and of NH3 decomposition on W suggest an NH3 decomposition mechanism involving surface nitride (W2N, W2N2) formation. Steady-state reaction rates were detected at 840-1200 K and 3.6 × 10-8-8 × 10-7 torr NH3. The apparent activation energy is ∼95 kJ/mol and the order with respect to NH3 is 0.6. Addition of 5 × 10-6 torr N or H has no effect on the NH3 decomposition rate.
