In testing the possibility of employing the catalysts used to carry out a hydrocarboxylation process, the authors found that the catalyst prepared by rapid pyrolysis of Co2(CO)8 adsorbed on the surface of a carbon support converted a C2H4:CO:H2O gas mixture into diethyl ketone at an appreciable rate even at 423 degree K. When catalysts obtained by rapid pyrolysis of Co2(CO)8 adsorbed on oxide supports were used, the predominant process was hydrogenation of ethylene to ethane. In a number of cases, traces of propionic aldehyde, ethyl propionate, and diethyl ketone were found in the reaction products. The unusual catalytic properties of the Co/carbon-support sample are explained by the particular state of the deposited metal.
