Abstract: Phosphate catalyst for the dehydrogenation of olefins is thermodynamically unstable under the operating conditions used in commercial dehydrogenation, and the catalyst is reduced under the influence of the reaction medium. As the length of the dehydrogenation run is extended or the concentration of hydrocarbons in the feed mixture is increased, the reduction is accompanied by the appearance of metallic nickel. The primary source of metallic nickel is whitlockite stabilized by nickel.
