Abstract: The authors have discovered that modification of a palladium catalyst with vanadium compounds leads to the formation of ethanol as one of the hydrogenation products of carbon monoxide. The catalysts were prepared by impregnating silica gel with aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions of PdCl2, VO2, and a mixture of the two, respectively. The catalysts were calcined at 400 degree C in a stream of oxygen prior to study. The catalytic activity and product composition for the hydrogenation of CO were determined after 4h reaction time. The catalyst was gradually deactivated during the course of the reaction process.
