Abstract: The reaction of ethylene with oxygen adsorbed beforehand on a silver surface is investigated. The initial rates of complete oxidation of ethylene and of oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide are found as functions of the degree of coverage of the surface with oxygen. The results of the investigation lead to the idea of active states of the surface silver atoms which participate in the oxidative conversion of ethylene.
