Abstract: The title catalysts were prepared by treating polymer-MgCl2 supports with TiCl4, VCl4, or VOCl3 and used in the polymerisation of ethylene. The activity of Ti catalysts was higher than that of V catalysts but the shape of the curve of their activity vs. concentration (c) of Ti or V was the same. Colorimetric, ESR, and activity data indicated that the active sites were formed via interaction of individual V(IV) or Ti(IV) species (low c) or their assocs. (high c) with (Me2CHCH2)3Al cocatalyst. The adsorption of V(IV) and Ti(IV) species and subsequent formation of the active sites occurred on the same surface sites of MgCl2. After interaction with cocatalyst, individual Ti (IV) species transformed into surface assocs. containing Ti(III).
