Abstract: The interaction of phosphoric acid with silica gel has been studied by high-resolution solid-state 31P and 29Si NMR. The formation of surface silicon phosphates, including some containing silicon in the six-coordinate state, has been established. Hydrolysis of the surface compounds with the formation of phosphoric acid takes place in the presence of water vapor.
