Abstract: The mechanism of the oxidation of ethylene on silver is discussed on the basis of investigations of the adsorption and isotropic exchange of oxygen and the reactivity of adsorbed oxygen toward ethylene. The dissociative adsorption of oxygen leads to the formation of multiplet complexes consisting of particles of surface silver oxide [Ag (I) and O(ads)] and active multiplets Ag(m)*. Partial and deep oxidation of ethylene occurs through its reaction with the multiplet complexes and includes as an intermediate step the activation of ethylene molecules on the multiplets. The steps in the kinetics and the overall catalytic reaction on a silver catalyst containing a clean, adsorbed layer of oxygen of variable concentration are described. The change in the catalytic properties of a silver catalyst in this model state, the standard characteristics of the catalytic activity resulting from the modification of the silver surface by products of the conversion of ethylene, is discussed.
