Abstract: Surface acid sites in highly dispersed magnesium chloride and titanium-magnesiun catalysts for ethylene polymerization are studied by diffuse-reflectance IR spectroscopy using adsorbed CO as a probe-molecule. Several types of Lewis acid centers are revealed on the surface of highly dispersed magnesium chloride, which represent coordinatively unsaturated magnesium ions. A method is proposed to quantitatively determine the concentration of acid sites of the support, based on the displacement of adsorbed CO by pyridine. The data on the concentration of acid sites are collected for several samples of magnesium chloride. Supported titanium tetrachloride is shown to interact with surface acid sites of magnesium chloride, while most surface compounds of titanium, formed upon interaction, do not exhibit Lewis acidic properties with respect to CO.
