Abstract: By a collection of physicochemical methods (XPA [x-ray phase analysis], Al-27 NMR, chemical analysis) the products of the reaction of gamma- and delta-Al2O3 with sulfuric acid are investigated as the amount of supported sulfate ions, the method of application, and the roasting temperature vary. Their catalytic activity in the isomerization of 1-butene is studied. It is shown that the thermal stability of the sulfate component, the specific surface, and the activity of the samples are determined by their chemical and phase composition. It is established that there is a "threshold" concentration of supported sulfate, below which the catalytic activity is very small. At higher concentrations, the specific activity exceeds that of the initial oxides by several orders of magnitude and approaches the activity of crystalline aluminum sulfate. The nature of the compounds forming during the interaction of the components is discussed on the basis of the accumulation of results obtained.
