Abstract: High-resolution Al-27 and P-31 NMR in the solid phase has been used to study x-ray-amorphous aluminum phosphates with the composition 0.2 less-than-or-equal-to P/Al less-than-or-equal-to 1.7, obtained by precipitation from aqueous solutions of Al(NO3)3 and H3PO4. Isotropic chemical shifts (CS) of both elements have been determined. On the basis of additivity of CS and the number of ligands, the composition of the coordination sphere of the elements in the amorphous phosphates has-been determined. It has been shown that the aluminum in these phosphates exists in both tetrahedral and octahedral oxygen environments, the ratio between them depending on P/Al and the calcination temperature. In phosphates with an equimolar composition a considerable quantity of the octahedrally coordinated aluminum is preserved even after crystallization of the phosphate. In the phosphates with P/Al > 1, the presence of five-coordinated aluminum has been established. The ligand environment of both elements is determined by the composition and by the heat-treating temperature. The results obtained in this work have furnished a basis for judging the possible nature of the compounds that are formed and the processes that take place during heat-treatment.
