Abstract: The EPR study reveals the presence of 7 different paramagnetic species formed due to adsorption of CO on γ-irradiated Al2O3. The formation of these species depends on the conditions of the adsorption and the irradiation, and on the preliminary treatment of the Al2O3. The adsorption is realized basically due to a reaction of CO with the hole center O- forming CO2- and C2O3-. In a case of the nonirradiated Al2O3, the adsorption of CO takes place on Al and O ions. A σ complex which forms on an adsorption of CO on Al3+ captures an addnl. electron and converts to a π complex when the system is irradiated after the adsorption. The irradiation of Al2O3 reduces the impurity Fe ions.
