Abstract: At room temperature, the adsorption capacity of γ-Al2O3 for a mixture of H with O exceeds the sum of the adsorption capacities of the gases adsorbed individually. This is due to the formation of a H-O surface compound having empirical formula (OH)n. The reaction takes place on active surface centers which participate in homomolecular O exchange. The mechanism of the surface reaction is discussed.
