Abstract: A mechanism for the formation of TiCl3 as polymerisation catalyst by interaction of TiCl4 with ethyl aluminum chloride was suggested from NMR and EPR spectra. NMR data showed a formation of TiCl4-ethylaluminum chloride complex which did not involve an exchange of ligands between Ti and Al atoms in the initial stage. The decomposition of a complex formed from Ti ethylene derivatives occurred by a bimolecular mechanism with separation of TiCl3. The parameters and conditions for stabilization and interconversion of the 4 types of Ti3+ ions, obsd. by EPR, were detected. The conditions for the first formation of different crystal forms of TiCl3 were detected and mechanisms for their formation were suggested.
