Abstract: Oxidation kinetics of ethene, propene, and 1-butene (esp. ethene) by HNO3 in the presence of PdSO4, Pd(ClO4)2, or Pd(NO3)2 were studied at 0 and ∼25°; the product from ethene was O2NOCH2CH2ONO2. The reaction with ethene took place via π-complex formation; the active catalyst species was [Pd(H2O)3(NO2)]+. The H2O-D2O (solvent) rate ratio was ∼1, owing to the absence of O-H bond breaking in the limiting stage of the reaction.
