Abstract: Oxidative coupling of PhR (R = H, Me, Cl) and of o-xylene and durene using O2 was carried out in the presence of Pd(OAc)2-H5PMo10V2O40 (I). The reaction was 1st order in O2, 0.9 order in I and 0.4-0.6 order in Pd(II). Addition of Hg(OAc)2 to the reaction mixture increased the rate and selectivity for p-RC6H4C6H4R-p. The rate-determining step was the reoxidation of reduced I, with little effect by R on the rate.
