Abstract: Addition of CO, O2, CO2, C2H2, and H2 to ethylene reduces the rate of polymerization on a chromium oxide catalyst and the molecular weight of polyethylene. The authors calculate the effective transfer and inhibition constants for these impurities. The investigated substances may be placed in the following decreasing order with regard to inhibiting effect and efficiencies as chain transfer agents- CO, O2, C2H2, CO2, H2. Addition of H2O to ethylene has no effect on the molecular weight of polyethylene.
