Abstract: Two mechanisms for the decomposition of H2O2-the radical- chain and the nonradical mechanisms-have been examined. It has been shown by calculations of the orbital energy along the assumed reaction paths by means of the extended Hueckel method that the radical-chain mechanism is facilitated by the existence of filled catalyst level, situated not lower than the upper half-filled level of the OH. The nonradical mechanism of decomposition, which involves the complex H4O4, according to the results of the calculations, requires the existence of an empty catalyst level and special steric conditions.
