Abstract: The number of growth centers in chromium oxide polymerization catalysts is compared with the content of chromium in various valence states. It is concluded that the Cr6+ ions are the active component of chromium oxide catalysts for ethylene polymerization. The initiation process is accompanied by the reduction of the chromium, and in the growth center the valence state of chromium is no higher than three.
